Radiation Fallout ShelterA lot of people are, and some stores are taking advantage by gouging prices for potassium iodide.  WARNING:  unless under the direct supervision of a doctor, do not take large doses of potassium iodide.  There is a significant risk of iodine toxicity.

You can protect your thyroid and your immune system safely, without getting robbed.  Increase your intake of dark green vegetables and wheatgrass.  Take a good, balanced vitamin & mineral formula, particularly those that include green foods and high potency B-vitamins.  Other great immune system boosters include: a balanced Calcium & Magnesium supplement, green tea, vitamin C & Zinc, and spirulina.  All are safe for adults and children.

Shake Off the Sleepy

Thinking of cutting back on caffeine in the new year?  Try this.  Start your day with a glass of water (room temp, not cold) with a lemon wedge.  Citrus helps glucose production - which is your main energy source.  Plus, citrus also stimulates glutathione production in the liver, which helps break down fats.

Water helps because we are dehydrated in the morning, contributing to that sluggish feeling.  With these natural boosts to your energy, you may not need as much coffee to get going!  Less stimulants in the morning can help you avoid that afternoon crash, as well.

March 15th, 2010

Just in case anyone actually needs another reason not to smoke, you know, in case cancer and death aren’t getting it for you:  A study published in the British Medical Journal shows a correlation between smoking and premature grey hair.  This was true for men and women alike, with men facing the additional likelihood of premature baldness.  Add that to purse string lines around the lips, yellowing fingernails and teeth, premature aging of the skin and you’ve got one pretty picture!

A good way to start changing bad habits is with a good system cleanse.  Getting toxins out of your system helps to break the addictive cycle and get you on your way to healthier habits.  Our Acai Cleanse also gives you a head start on antioxidants to limit and possibly help your body reverse some of those premature signs of aging.  Today is a good day to start!

Multivitamins May Help Weight Loss in Obese Women

By Stephen Daniels, 25-Feb-2010
Total Body Multi for WomenSupplements of multivitamins and minerals may help reduce body weight and improve blood fat levels, according to results of a clinical trial in obese women.

Results of a 26-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention study with 87 women found that multivitamins and minerals were associated with significantly lower body weight, body mass index, and fat mass.

Levels of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were also significantly reduced, while HDL-cholesterol levels were increased, according to findings published in the International Journal of Obesity.

Obesity rates have skyrocketed in the US in recent years – 15 per cent of the population was obese in 1980, compared to 34 per cent today, according to figures from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

If other clinical trials in other populations support the findings, it could see multivitamins and minerals touted for their weight management potential.

How Diet Soda Undermines Your Health

Posted in get energy, stay healthy  by admin
February 28th, 2010

We all know by now that soda is one of the most evil things you can put in your body.  Nasty chemicals, gut-fattening high fructose corn syrup, and a myriad of health problems caused by this carbonated cocktail are all ignored by those who don’t care about their health or body.  And some folks are just plain misinformed.

Surprisingly, many people falsely believe that “diet” soda is in some way a good thing for losing body fat. In fact, I hear people all the time proudly state that they eat so healthy and only drink diet soda.

Let’s clear that up right now.  There is NOTHING remotely healthy about drinking diet soda.  It isn’t even hydrating or “thirst-quenching” as the makers always advertise. In fact, several studies show that dedicated diet soda drinkers got even FATTER than their regular soda drinking counterparts.

Here are some findings from an 8-year University of Texas study.

“What didn’t surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity. What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher.”

“There was a 41 percent increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day,” says the UT study.

Ok, as if we didn’t already know how bad regular soda was for us, now they’re showing us that diet soda makes us even fatter than the already bad stuff!

There are several reasons for this phenomenon.

The artificial sweeteners in diet sodas create a negative hormonal response in the body that increases fat storing hormone production and increases cravings for more sweets and refined carbohydrates in the time period after consuming the diet drink.

Another reason is that people may subconsciously think that because they are drinking a diet soda, that gives them more leeway to eat more of everything else, hence consuming more calories overall.

The bottom line is that if you’re serious about your health and body, soda of any kind (and artificial sweeteners in anything for that matter!) should be avoided, except for very rare occasions when you can’t avoid them.  If you can’t avoid them, be sure to consume your diet soda with food to minimize the downside effects.

So what is a good alternative to diet soda?

The best alternative is pure water.  Most of us don’t drink enough water in the first place, and consuming soft drinks in its place just makes matters worse.  If you want a little flavor, add a squeeze of lemon or try some unsweetened iced tea.

You have plenty of options with teas - green, white, black, oolong, red… and we know about the benefits of the EGCG found in some teas.  Be creative in making and blending different teas and you’ll enjoy it more. Plus, you get a greater array of anti-aging antioxidants.

If you feel the need for sweetness, stevia is a good, naturally non-caloric sweetener, or add a small amount of honey. Just a few drops will do, as honey is much sweeter than table sugar.  Agave juice is another natural alternative that won’t add a lot of calories.

Calcium and Weight Loss

February 4th, 2010

Calcium FoodsQuestion:  For years I’ve seen ads claiming that calcium helps weight loss.  Is this true  or just more marketing hype?

Answer:  Most of us are deficient in calcium, particularly women.  An estimated 70% of American women have a calcium deficiency, which can lead to sleep problems, impaired immune systems, PMS or menopausal symptoms, and bone density issues including osteoporosis.

Studies show that 1,200mg of calcium daily can alleviate the deficiency.  In one recent study, women who took a daily dose of 1,200mg of calcium, balanced with magnesium, lost six times as much weight as the control group following the same diet and exercise plan.

To get the calcium you need, include almonds, dark green leafy vegetables (Popeye knew what he was doing), and citrus fruits in your daily diet.  It is tough to get enough through food sources alone, particularly while dieting, so it is a good idea to include a daily calcium supplement.  For most people, 1,200 mg daily is plenty.  There is no health benefit to taking more, in most cases.

Be sure your calcium supplement is balanced with magnesium.  Your body needs magnesium to absorb and use calcium, and even more of us are deficient in magnesium than calcium!  We have several forms available with the right balance of calcium and magnesium.  So even if you have had issues digesting calcium, chances are we have a form you can use.  Best of all, even the best calcium and magnesium supplements are inexpensive to use.

Fun Names Help Kids Eat More Vegetables

Posted in stay healthy  by admin
July 30th, 2009

A presentation at the 2009 Annual School Nutrition Association meeting in Washington, DC suggested that researchers at Cornell University found that by telling 4-year-olds they were eating “X-Ray vision carrots,” the kids willingly downed twice as much as when they were told they were eating “carrots.”

The researchers concluded that giving vegetables interesting names like “dinosaur broccoli trees” and “super power peas” will have them scarfing down more veggies at mealtime……..at least until they figure out what you’re up to.

Burn More Calories

Posted in stay healthy  by admin
July 29th, 2009

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
You probably already know that in order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. This article will take a closer look at some easy ways to burn calories that you can incorporate into your daily life.

Steps

  1. Fidget. Studies show that lean people fidget for about 150 minutes a day more than obese people do. That kind of low-grade activity (tapping feet and fingers, twirling hair, gesturing while speaking, etc.) can burn 350 calories a day, which translates into 10-30 pounds a year![1] It’s called Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), which is basically any movement that isn’t intended as exercise. You can burn an extra 100-150 calories an hour by increasing NEAT.[2] Here are some ideas:
    • Standing burns 50% more calories than sitting.[2] Stand while talking on the phone, using the computer, or reading the paper.
    • Pacing is even better. By pacing, you can burn 90 more calories an hour than if you were sitting still.[2] Make it a habit to pace whenever you use the phone.
    • Buy a work station or desk that you can stand at or, if you can, set up a desk over a treadmill. By walking 1 mile an hour while you work, you’ll burn an additional 100 calories per hour which, if you do this for 2-3 hours a day, you could lose 44-60 pounds in a year. It’s recommended that you start slowly, though, walking 15 minutes every hour and then increasing gradually. Alternatively, you can use a mini-stepper under a tall desk, or while watching TV to achieve the same results.[2]
  2. Reach for the caffeine, pass on the sugar and cream. Caffeine tends to increase the number of calories you burn, probably because they stimulate thermogenesis — one way your body generates heat and energy from digesting food[3] and because the boost in energy means you move around more (which means more calories burned). Having 250 milligrams of caffeine with a meal can increase the calories spent metabolizing the meal by 10%. Green tea, in particular, seems to be especially conducive to burning calories.[4] So instead of having soda or any other calorie-laden drink with your meals, go for an unsweetened cup of coffee or tea. Skip the sugar, milk, cream, or any other caloric enhancements so that you don’t replace the extra calories you’re burning. Drinking coffee or tea plain will take some getting used to, but purchasing high-quality beans or tea leaves will certainly help.
  3. Increase your after-meal burn by eating more vegetables and phasing out meat and dairy products. Your body expends around 200 calories to digest your food. People who eat fibrous fruit, vegetables, complex carbs, and low-fat meat burn even more calories after they eat. In fact, vegetarians generally have a bigger after-meal burn than their omnivorous counterparts.[5] And no matter what you eat, adding 5g of Tabasco sauce to any meal can raise your metabolism by 12-20 percent for up to two hours after you’re done.[6] This is caused by capsaicin - the nutrient that makes chile peppers hot.
  4. Drink lemon juice in lukewarm water. This formulation gets more effective when done empty stomach.
  5. Drink ice water. The colder the water you drink, the more calories you burn, since your body expends more energy warming up the water. If you have 8 glasses (64 oz) of ice-cold water in a day, you’ll burn 70 more calories than if you drank 8 glasses of a body temperature beverage.[7] In fact, this principle will work with any calorie-free beverage, as long as it’s ice cold,[8] so you might want to ice up that coffee and tea mentioned earlier for cumulative calorie-burning effects. Keep in mind, however, that the weight loss impact of this one particular practice isn’t drastic: It would take 435 glasses of ice water (about two months, assuming 8 glasses a day) to lose one pound. And, don’t go overboard. There’s such a thing as water toxicity. Follow the guidelines in How to Drink More Water Every Day.
  6. Chill out. Shivering burns calories, so if you can spend more time outside when it’s cold, you’ll crank up the calorie furnace. Even if you don’t shiver, though, you can get a 3-7% increase in calorie burn just from your body warming itself (similar to the principle at work when you drink ice water).[2] Just don’t run away with this idea and get yourself sick!

Tips

  • The first steps towards weigh loss must include both Diet and Exercise. The simple tips listed above will not lead you to lose weight substantially, if your diet does not reflect the change.

Warnings

  • As with any weight-loss behavior or diet you adopt, speak first with your doctor. Get professional advice when deciding to change your fitness regimen or diet. These tips are meant as just that–tips, they are not meant to provide a comprehensive weight-loss plan.
  • While some little things certainly help burn extra calories, do not think they are an easy way out. For instance, caffeine might help you metabolize a little more after a big meal, but it might also very quickly be detrimental to your health, especially if you start thinking along the lines of “oh well, if 250 mg will burn an extra 10%, let’s go for 500 mg and have an extra bag of crisps”. You may end up experiencing tachycardia, trembling hands and insomnia long before you start going down a size. And no amount of getting yourself frozen can ever replace a healthy diet. Those tips are just ways of boosting your dieting efforts, so DO NOT take them to the extreme in order to have a good excuse for not dieting properly. This would only ruin your health.

Boost Your Metabolism with a Morning Smoothie!

Posted in get energy, stay healthy  by admin
May 29th, 2009

Did you know that a delicious tasting smoothie for breakfast can boost your metabolism and help you lose weight faster?

Here’s how it works. The types of foods you choose to eat in the morning will determine what your blood sugar levels will be throughout the day. For this reason, the type of breakfast you consume can actually cause weight loss.

High carbohydrate foods (other than ones low on the glycemic index) cause blood sugar levels to skyrocket and then plummet. Conversely, when you consume a high protein meal, your metabolism will quickly rise, and your blood sugar levels will remain high for five to six hours longer. Study after study shows us that if the breakfast meal is the right combination of carbohydrates, protein, and fat to help slow down the digestion, then sugar will be absorbed into the bloodstream gradually. Consequently, energy levels stay high longer while fat-making insulin levels are lowered.

For this reason, if you drink a fruit smoothie that is supplemented with protein and healthy fats, you get the combination of carbohydrates, protein, and fat that will boost your metabolism, help get your blood sugar levels for the day off to a good start, and last but not least, help you lose weight faster.

My personal Smoothie King(R) favorite is the Chocolate or Almond Mocha High Protein(TM).

Another Reason to Lose Weight Now

Posted in stay healthy  by admin
February 5th, 2009

Losing those extra pounds may restore some of the heart’s youth, according to a study published in the American Journal of Physiology. 1 The method of weight loss, from eating less, exercising more or a little of both, is less important than getting the weight OFF.

According to the study, weight loss is the single best way to improve cardiovascular health in overweight individuals. The study enrolled 25 men and women who were overweight, but not obese. After changing exercise and eating habits for one year, all subjects lost about 12% of their body weight. Ultrasound imaging of the heart showed improvement in the health of heart muscle and arteries in all 25 subjects.

Some of the benefits of weight loss, like high blood pressure or heart disease, take months or years to reveal themselves. However significant weight loss in overweight individuals produces immediate improvement in the health of the heart muscle.
